The FRS was authorized on 06 June 96. It uses FM with a peak deviation of +/- 2.5 kHz. Maximum power is 0.5w ERP. Channels 1 - 7 are shared with GMRS.

FRS (Family Radio Service) is an unlicensed radio service. Power is limited to 500mw (1/2 watt) output.  

GMRS frequencies are NOT FRS frequencies. Some radios claim to have 22 channels available for FRS use. This is not true! There are only 14 channels allocated for FRS unlicensed use. The GMRS frequencies require a valid FCC license to use.
